First, Taron Egerton deserves every accolade he’ll receive for this. While his voice doesn’t ascend to the richness of the real Elton, his singing and dancing talents are showcased wonderfully. Rocketman differs from last year’s musical biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, by unleashing the story of Elton John as a fantasy musical. In doing so, it, in my opinion, captures the full range of emotions – from trials to joys – without trapping it in the confines of reality. It’s a painting, not a mirror.
As a side note, it takes the topic of homosexuality a little further, in a mainstream movie, then we have seen. And some audience members might feel as squeamish as Elton John’s parents would.
